1999 Q45t (Not actually my car pictured). The typical nineties Japanese treatment - a sea of dark plastics. Could be worse? Far from luxurious though, especially given how similar most contemporary Nissan gauges are, from the 240 to the R34.

Here’s a picture of Bullmobile’s gauge cluster.
This is Rat-L-Trap’s dashboard which is actually a board.

Super agricultural! Love it, and I didn’t know you owned something beyond the E46. I can always appreciate something from the “throw some gauges into a big flat panel” era

1994 Honda Prelude VTEC gauge cluster. Picked this up from a junkyard and tested it in my 1993 S. I already had one with lower miles, so I decided to sell this one.
The 3rd and 5th gen clusters are way less cool.

I wouldn't call it low mileage.

OOOO that’s good. The tach is my favorite part, what an odd shape. Those blobs at the base of the needle are also hilarious. The nineties were a helluva drug

The cool thing about my gauges that you can’t see in this picture is there are little moving indicators on the outside rim of the gauge. On the speedo, there’s a little marker that swings up to your set speed when you use cruise control. On the tach, there’s a little thingie that shows you a lower redline as the engine warms up. The first time I set the cruise I was like “whoa look at the cool little marker thingie swinging up to the speed I set!”
![]() 07/15/2016 at 11:09 |

Only a part of it, but what’s not in the pic is just the speedometer, temp, and time above what is pictured.

Super chunky!! With the fake mud splash as a redline... hilarious. This must be American?

Damn they’re bare tho. Revs, Speed and the fuel. No temp or anything else?

Not my pic but this is the same. Also, it’s apparently possible to swap in a cluster from a 2001 Sequoia and get some more engine info.

dat BMW amber! I miss it. Cool to have a little cruise control indicator, I like that. My old car (E24) didn’t even have illumination behind the gauges, just a couple floodlights that lit the tach and speedo through holes in the gauges. Very old school, but still the exact same color!

![]() 07/15/2016 at 11:18 |

Yeah, the whole interior of the car was 90s Japanese craziness at its peak. The fuel/temp gauge was a series of digital bars instead of physical gauges.
Here’s my 5th gen’s much more conventional cluster.

Nope. 3.4 V6 buried in typical late 90's Toyota vacuum lines. And it’s a truck motor where peak power is 700 RPM from redline.

What a cool design. Props to Lexus for going out of their way here - the tiny gauges within the speedo are sick, and I like that the digital readout filling up a space that keeps the right/left symmetry going
![]() 07/15/2016 at 11:29 |

Old school gauges are always recessed SO DEEP into the dash lol.

so what you’re saying is that this car is REALLY fast lol ;P
![]() 07/15/2016 at 11:33 |

No. Because you never get to the peak power RPM. Because the trans usually shifts at 4100.

Ahhhh it’s one of these! I’ve read that they’re plastered with little easter eggs including a bunch of tiny jeeps. Why don’t more manufacturers have a sense of fun like this?? (probably because they aren’t italian)
![]() 07/15/2016 at 11:36 |

yep I was being sarcastic haha. I have a similar problem - I may have a V8 but it’s only 4.1 liters and doesn’t do anything below 3k rpm

Endless varieties of switch setups and charge/choke/oil lights on these, as well as gauge differences, but here’s one that’s pretty close to mine:
This is also a match - early ‘63.
This is in a Continental, but it’s sans A/C and has the same radio so the only difference is the steering wheel emblem:

BMW amber is just the best. Soothes the soul... of BMW nerds at least
![]() 07/15/2016 at 11:41 |
|
As a consequence, I tend to rev out other peoples’ cars more because I think I need to be high in the revs to get power. And then I see a redline all the way up at like 7k and I’m like hmmmmmm...... We could go a little more.
![]() 07/15/2016 at 11:42 |

The only thing missing on my coupe would be the heated seats. A manual would be nice, but I’d probably thrash it.
![]() 07/15/2016 at 11:45 |

Wayyy more conventional. I used to be such a FWD hater... and still kinda am. But TBH I’m getting into older Hondas now as an exception and I really want to drive one. Back in the day there was this MINT 80s prelude Si in my college parking lot, I think it brainwashed me.

Nice!! Almost as much as my friend’s E36 before he took it off the road - that thing had been through a couple engines by 250k though

It’s funny how similar our layouts are. I have the same exact gauges and needles, warning light banks in the same places, and even the same blinking red security light haha
![]() 07/15/2016 at 11:56 |

That little three-sector thing on the left is adjustment for the heater. You wind it through the range with a little knob. The A/C models had a four-sector thing. Oddly enough, even though there are two completely separate heater cores and two separate evaporators on A/C models, I think they control together completely.
![]() 07/15/2016 at 11:57 |

LOL. I’ve been playing this too.
![]() 07/15/2016 at 11:57 |

They are pretty basic. The Touring trim (introduced for 2011) had upgraded gauges with more info:
Personally, I think mine look better, but I do wish I had a legitimate temp gauge rather than a light.

I love me some 80s! They extend pretty far to the right of the steering wheel too, that’s unusual

Pic of the gauge cluster in my ‘09 Hyundai Accent hatchback from back in April when it rolled over to 100,000kms. Excuse the pollen/dust! I always thought the gauges were pretty decent for a basic car. The usual white-on-black, but at least they added little flourishes like the silver trim and black-on-white edging around the gauge faces. Clear, legible an easy to read at a glance. Would’ve preferred the version of this cluster in some cars which also had a coolant temperature gauge, but beggars can’t be choosers!
The night pic is from around when I first got the car in June 2013 with the cluster backlighting on the LOWEST setting...low is still quite bright on this car!

I honestly have no problem with the newer Mustang interior. Compared to before... it’s fine!! And I think the gauges are a perfect retro touch. I would absolutely buy a 2015+ GT in a couple years when they’re slightly used

This is not my actual car either, but it’s the same gauge cluster. The main difference is that mine is missing the clock. I have yet to find a functional one for a price I want to pay, and reproduction clocks go for $200. That’s right, two hundred dollars for a fucking dash clock. Also, my ammeter isn’t hooked up because the company that made my wiring harness recommends against hooking them up when using a non-stock alternator that puts out more current. I’ll be replacing it with a voltmeter from a later car.

Very plain and sensible but it looks lovely all lit up in red at night.
My old Neon had a real nice set, white faces with a very faint dot pattern. The needls lit up a brilliant almost crystalline orange at night.

As a BMW nerd I’m super into it. You can see a hint of 80s BMW gauges in the tach, especially with the comical instant MPG readout

Only that’s a Lambo, whose owner could find $5k in their pockets, and the clock is for a 45 year old Chevy whose owner needs to search the couch for beer money. Sometimes you just have to shake your head about this stuff. http://www.classicindustries.com/product/1971/c…

haha yeahhh fair enough. But parts cost to price ratio is probably pretty nuts on both.

That tach is so weird, too. The scale is all over the place, jumping from 0 to 1 to 1.5 to 2 to 2.5 to 3 to 4 to 5 to 6, skip 7, to 8. Zany!!

Interestingly, they’re not front/back, they’re left/right. The rear seats *do*, however, have heat/ AC - there are ducts running to the back seats through the front doors. ALL TEH LUXUREH
